The prize acknowledges postgraduate clinical psychology students in Master and Doctor of Psychology programs, and combined Masters/PhD programs who demonstrate high levels of clinical skill, combined with the ability to design and conduct clinically relevant research.  The prize is offered at each university offering an APAC-accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program.

Administration

  1. The award is the responsibility of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.
  2. The award may be offered at each Australian university with an APAC-accredited postgraduate psychology program. Following the close of the call for nominations, the chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, as well as the student representatives on the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists will be notified of the candidates.
  3. The award may be presented by the relevant state chair of the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists at a public forum.

Eligibility

Nominees must have completed their final year of Clinical training of an Australian University with an APAC accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program.

Nomination process

A call for nominations for the 2011 prize will be formally issued in November by way of email to the heads of department of each Australian tertiary institution with an APAC-accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program.

The deadline for submissions for the 2011 prize will be 28 February, 2012.

The National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists will review and, where appropriate, endorse nominations by mid April 2012, with winners notified thereafter.

A formal announcement of winners will be made in the second issue of Clinical Psychologist for 2012. Winners will also be invited to be presented with their awards at the AGM of their state branch of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

    Note:

    1. Candidates must be nominated by the head of department of an Australian tertiary institution.
    2. Only one candidate can be nominated by the head of department from each Australian tertiary institution. All nominations from a head of department should be prepared by the nominee's supervisor in association with the head of school and the nominee.
    3. Nominations should be addressed to the chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists and received by APS National Office prior to the closing date.
    4. If, in any one prize application year, there is no suitable candidate nominated for the prize from a particular university, there will be no prize allocated to that university for the year of nomination.

    Selection criteria

    In judging nominees for the award, the chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists will have regard to the following criteria:

    1. the application of a scientist-practitioner model in research, coursework and placements
    2. the development of a research project in the area of Clinical Psychology with a research question reflecting current areas of interest and need in clinical psychology
    3. the achievement of high level of clinical skills as judged by academic staff involved in teaching clinical interventions and also by peers. This may include consistently high marks on supervisor reports from placements
    4. the provision of support to fellow peers.

    Value of the award

    Successful candidates for the APS College of Clinical Psychologists Student Prize will:

    1. have their names published on the APS College of Clinical Psychologists website
    2. receive a certificate of acknowledgment of their achievement, presented by the relevant state chair of the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists at a public forum
    3. be invited to submit an abstract of their research thesis for publication in an edition of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists journal, Clinical Psychologist.

    A call for nominations for the 2012 award will be formally issued to the heads of department of each Australian tertiary institution with an APAC-accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program. The nomination close date to be advised at the time of the call for nominations.
