This paper aims to increase understanding about the psychological aspects of successful ageing. It addresses issues ranging from the mental health of older Australians and the quality of aged care services, to broader perspectives on life transitions such as retirement and widowhood. Psychologists are challenged to prepare for the needs of an ageing population in ways that empower older adults.

A brief on psychological services for older people has been developed by several members of the APS Psychology and Ageing Interest Group, and others who work with older people. Feedback is welcome from those who would like to contribute to the issue of fostering improved services for older people in Australia.
